BATCAT! Leeds.

I spotted this in Leeds back in January and I was so taken aback by it I didn’t even think to making a note of which shop this striking window display belonged to (but I have a feeling it was on Great George Street).

Also, note the moustache…

1. Car Garden: According to “Hull Daily Mail” this brilliant garden was designed by Adele Howitt and Fiona Weir, although I didn’t know that at the time! To quote the article, “Adele said the artwork carried a serious message – creating a haven for endangered bees and an urban space for the insects to pollinate flowers“. I’m a great supporter of bees and hope Adele and Fiona keep up the good work. If you’re interested in bees as well you might interested in another post of mine concerning “Song for the last Queen”, an bee themed art installation by Sybille Neumeyer: https://anticsroadshowblogspot.wordpress.com/category/souvenirs-2/

2. The Touring Caravan Gallery: Another brilliant idea! If you want to know exactly where the Touring Caravan Gallery is at the moment, check out its Facebook page. It could be closer to you than you think!

3. Pie @ Freedom Festival: If you’re in Hull and you like pies, why aren’t you at Hull Pie eating a delicious pie? You’ll find Hull Pie at 19 Trinity House Lane, HU1 2 bang in the centre of The Old Town. Hull Pie has also branched out to 202 Newland Avenue, but I haven’t had the pleasure of going up there yet. You can keep up to date with the menu on Twitter: https://twitter.com/thehullpie

5. The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show: Hearing that Craig Charles was going to be doing his BBC 6 Music show live from the Freedom Festival was what made me cross the Humber Bridge in the first place, so it be rude of me not to include a photograph of him in my top five. In fact I took quite a few photographs as I made my way through the massive crowd to the front here, so there might be another Craig Charles related post to follow.

Henderson Park.

Henderson Park.

Like everything from my childhood, I remember Henderson Park being bigger. Coldstream was a regular family holiday destination and stopping off point on our way further North to Edinburgh and the Highlands, because I have a family connection to this Scottish Boarder town, but due to changes in circumstance I had more than a ten year break between this visit and the one before. My sister and I walked from our Aunties’ house at the end of the Town and we walked down the High Street subconsciously heading towards Henderson Park.

Coldstream Guards monument.

Coldstream Guards monument.

The Scottish Boarders Council website informs me that the park was formally the tennis court of a Dr. Henderson, which I didn’t know until today, so that should give you an idea of the size of it. Much like most gardens in the UK it has its well tended lawn in the centre with flower beds around it and monumental stone on end as a focal point. The thing that indicates is a public park is the path that allows you to walk around without ruining the precious turf (I’m not sure if you’re allowed to walk on the grass, but we never have).

The stone monument at the far end of the park celebrates Coldstreams connection with the Coldstream Guards, one of the finest regiments in the British Army (although I am incredibly biased; Her Majesty The Queen does have four other Foot Guard regiments whose member might have something to say about that). It was from Coldstream that General George Monck marched the first Coldstreamers across the boarder into England in 1660 in order to restore the Stuart monarchy.

But the highlight of Henderson Park is the view from behind the monument:

That isthe River Tweed and Northumberland on the far bank. Beautiful isn’t it?

Swanage.

Skimming stones.

It is a rainy morning at home today, so it’s not surprising I’m thinking of sunny holidays elsewhere. Looking through my photographs of seaside holidays past I’ve noticed that visitors to Swanage, on the Dorset coast, seem to have a very special relationship with the sea. Only one of my photographs shows people sunbathing on the beach, sat in their deckchairs and eating their ice cream and the majority of captured moments have caught people (and one dog) relaxing by the waters edge. Here are five of my favourite photographs from that day:

Haworth, 17/05/14.

I spotted this up in the window of a bookshop in Haworth [I couldn’t remember the name of the establishment, but a popular search engine has not only informed me that the business is called Venables & Bainbridge Books, but if you looked on “street view” you can see the photograph in the window for yourself; to the right of the door]. Does this photograph really depicts The Tour of Britain c.1959? What does it matter; it’s a great image!

I wasn’t a frequent visitor to the church of St. Charles Borromeo, but it was on my route down Jarratt Street to “The Old English Gentleman” public house on Worship Street. In times of great stress, usually in the weeks leading up to my exams (I was at university at the time), I’d wander in and spend a moment in silent prayer (before walking the rest of the way to “The Old English” for a pint of Smooth). Look out for it if you’re on your way to the New Theatre on Kingston Square, which is off Jarratt Street, or if you’re on your way to “The Old English”.

“Chiffon Evening Dress 1927”, Castle Howard Costume Museum postcard.

When I found this postcard I couldn’t recall seeing a Costume Museum at Castle Howard when I visited in 2004 and this afternoon “The Telegraph” on-line informs me that the costume collection was sold off in 2003 to help fund the restoration of the house, so I wouldn’t have seen it. What a shame! If this postcard is anything to go by, the collection must have been quite something.

A War Household or A Photograph of Photographs 17/05/14.

A War Household or A Photograph of Photographs 17/05/14.

A photograph incorporating twelve individual portraits, in a range of styles and frames, with enough space left for two vases of flowers and some interesting period features; how could I resist?
At some point the photograph has been cropped, cutting off some writing that was on the back; presumably a description of what we’re looking at [curses]. We have been left with the date however; July 1945.
Whoever took this photograph must have had a very stressful Second World War with the welfare of what looks like five soldiers, three airmen and a Royal Marine on their mind for the duration! I wonder how they’re all related?
Note the soldier who is so addicted to his pipe that he wont take it out of his mouth to have his photograph taken!
For those interested in interior design, note the textured wall paper, the rather bulky lock on the door, the bannister rail and the bakelite light switch.

The Slow Train to Dundee, Perth Railway Station, 19/03/14.

What it lacks in speed it makes up for in floral decoration; note the flowers in the funnel! This charming and rather elaborate plant pot stands in the car park, welcoming travellers to Perth railway station. This was my last photograph in Perth before moving on to Dundee; hence the title.

Knitted Tie Portrait.

Knitted Tie Portrait.

For at least the last five years I have favoured the knitted tie above all other styles, although I can’t recall exactly when I purchased my first, but I think I might have discovered it in a vintage shop in the Grand Arcade, Leeds. The trend doesn’t seen to have caught on however, because I’ve never met anyone else wearing one; not that I consider myself a trend setter! Hence my surprise at finding this portrait of a proud knitted tie wearer.

The photographers name and the address of his studio is printed on the back, “F. Scrimshaw, 46 Woodhouse Lane, Leeds”. The Leeds Museum and Galleries website informs me that F. Scrimshaw appears in the city’s trade directories between 1906 and 1914 at the afore mentioned address and they have a photograph of his as part of their on-line archive and the Leodis “photographic archive of Leeds” has a photograph of “Francis” Scrimshaw’s studio at 46 Woodhouse lane in the mid-1960’s.

Purchased: Haworth, May 2014.

Other photographs from my collection can be seen here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/121480122@N04/sets/72157643085991143/
