These carving on what Batsford and Fry describe as “The Norman Core” of the West Front in their “The Cathedrals of England” have always fascinated me. I have been a regular visitor to Lincoln over the years and, even if I do not enter the Cathedral, I will always find time to marvel at the Romanesque friezes and these fantastical carvings, which surround the West Doors.

These photographs date from 2007, but photographs of the West Front appear quite regularly in my photograph albums.
