I remember these riders quite clearly, but I never did find out what  aspect of London life these men were representing in the Lord Mayor’s Procession, because I didn’t buy a programme, but it was remarkably easy to believe that the Lord Mayor would not be coming and that The City of London was under new management. Don’t they look splendid! I’m not an expert in matters of national costume, but there is something of The Great Steppe about them.

Places and objects brought to me by the wonders of film and television do not always stand up to closer examination, but I always think of the day my sister took me to the M Shed’s “Wallace and Gromit from the drawing board” exhibition as the day I met Wallace and Gromit; the detail is incredible.

At the time I appeared to be more impressed with the view from the M Shed roof, which is or certainly was fully accessible at the time of my visit. I posted “The View from the M Shed Roof” back in 2014.

I’m sure the interior of the room was just as interesting.

According to Canterbury.co.uk, “Greyfriars Chapel, set in the Franciscan Gardens, is the only building now remaining of the first English Franciscan Friary built in 1267, forty three years after the first Friars settled in Canterbury, during the lifetime of St Francis of Assisi“, but I don’t think I knew that at the time; it was simply a beautiful building viewed from a rather interesting museum.

The Canterbury Heritage Museum is housed in “the magnificent medieval Poor Priests Hospital” and houses a wide range of treasures, including… the original Bagpuss. In 1958 Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin set up Smallfilms animations in a barn in Bleam, near Canterbury. Between them they were responsible for producing Noggin The Nog, The Clangers, Bagpuss and many other animated children’s television favourites.

It’s amusing to think that there are so few degrees of separation between St Francis of Assisi, the creators of The Clangers and myself!

“It’s always time for tea“.

This depiction of the Hat Hatter’s tea party is by a Bristol based illustrator’s social group called Brillustration and I hope they are still cheering up the shop windows along Park Street, despite Blackwell’s Bookshop relocating since my last visit to Bristol [if this article in the Bristol Post is to be believed].

The Queen of Hearts – “OFF with their heads!”

I have never read “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll, but of course I’m aware of most of the key features of the plot and I have occasionally found myself, coincidently, following in the author’s footsteps [Lewis Carroll and I have the dodo from the Oxford University Museum of Natural History in common for example].

I suppose that is what makes something iconic – when you get recognition with the bare minimum of effort!
