"Product of HMP Hull".

“Product of HMP Hull”.

On Saturday I posted a photograph of these memorial plaques wrapped in bubble wrap [https://anticsroadshowblogspot.wordpress.com/2014/11/08/plaques-wrapped-in-bubble-wrap-paragon-interchange-hull-081114/] and here is one of them now they have been officially unveiled. One of the interesting things about them is, if you look at the bottom right hand corner of each of them, you’ll see, written in gold, “Product of HMP Hull” and, credit where credit is due, the staff and inmates have done a really good job.

To quote Station Manager David Hatfield, interviewed by BBC News, “We have over 2,000 names and 20 plaques but it started as one simple plaque but as we got the names from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission they just kept growing“.

Interestingly, the Hull Daily Mail, lists the number of names as 4,730. 4,730 Hull servicemen who left the city, mostly via what is now the Paragon Interchange, to the various theatres of World War One, never to return.

Hull.
The Hull Daily Mail informs me that these memorial plaques are going to be unveiled tomorrow and as it happens I will be back in Hull on Monday, so I will be able to see them and photograph them without the bubble wrap to; God willing. The 20 plaques, recording the names of the 2,000 Hull servicemen who lost their lives during World War One, looked so striking this morning, even covered up, that I thought I would take some photographs.

Back in February 2013.

Back in February 2013.

The Hull Daily Mail informs me that the “crumbling” Wellington House, in Hull’s Fruit Market area, is set for demolition this week, which is a great shame (mainly because it was a regular landmark on my strolls around the city). I’ve taken one or two photographs of this particular corner of Hull and I thought I better share them before it changes beyond recognition. I wonder what my next photograph of the corner of Wellington Street and Queen Street will look like?

1. Car Garden: According to “Hull Daily Mail” this brilliant garden was designed by Adele Howitt and Fiona Weir, although I didn’t know that at the time! To quote the article, “Adele said the artwork carried a serious message – creating a haven for endangered bees and an urban space for the insects to pollinate flowers“. I’m a great supporter of bees and hope Adele and Fiona keep up the good work. If you’re interested in bees as well you might interested in another post of mine concerning “Song for the last Queen”, an bee themed art installation by Sybille Neumeyer: https://anticsroadshowblogspot.wordpress.com/category/souvenirs-2/

2. The Touring Caravan Gallery: Another brilliant idea! If you want to know exactly where the Touring Caravan Gallery is at the moment, check out its Facebook page. It could be closer to you than you think!

3. Pie @ Freedom Festival: If you’re in Hull and you like pies, why aren’t you at Hull Pie eating a delicious pie? You’ll find Hull Pie at 19 Trinity House Lane, HU1 2 bang in the centre of The Old Town. Hull Pie has also branched out to 202 Newland Avenue, but I haven’t had the pleasure of going up there yet. You can keep up to date with the menu on Twitter: https://twitter.com/thehullpie

5. The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show: Hearing that Craig Charles was going to be doing his BBC 6 Music show live from the Freedom Festival was what made me cross the Humber Bridge in the first place, so it be rude of me not to include a photograph of him in my top five. In fact I took quite a few photographs as I made my way through the massive crowd to the front here, so there might be another Craig Charles related post to follow.

If you find yourself in Hull, go and see this. I had not taken much notice of the paintings of Beryl Cook before, but this exhibition was something of an eye opener. The Maritime Museum sounds like an odd venue, especially since there is an art gallery just across the road, but the Court Room on the first floor is a great exhibition space and well suited to the occasion.

If you want to know more, have a look at this article from the Hull Daily Mail: http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/Hull-s-Beryl-Cook-exhibition-attracts-8-000/story-21004977-detail/story.html
