Bristol.
Look at these charming knitted characters! I wonder if they represent the staff at Sew ‘n’ Sew? The shop had a “Back in 5 minutes” sign up in the window, so I couldn’t pop my head around the door to check. I can’t knit, but I greatly admire those who can and I love the idea of knitting as an arts and crafts medium, as opposed to a way of producing a functional item. I would recommend a trip to St. Nicholas Market in Bristol anyway, so while you’re there it would rude not to visit Sew ‘n’ Sew! If you can’t get down to Bristol, they do have a Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sew-n-Sew.

Bobbing along…

The Kingston Hotel is a familiar landmark on my walks around Hull, but I have never noticed the knitted fish in the window before (they must be a recent addition)! The public house stands on the corner of Trinity House Lane and North Church Side [I have never been in, but that’s because I prefer to go on these walks before 12 o’clock and as a rule I don’t go in public houses before noon – unless I’ve skipped breakfast and am in desperate need for “The Full English”].

Besides the reflection of myself in the window you might be able to make out Trinity Church (on the right) and Trinity Square (on the left).

1. Car Garden: According to “Hull Daily Mail” this brilliant garden was designed by Adele Howitt and Fiona Weir, although I didn’t know that at the time! To quote the article, “Adele said the artwork carried a serious message – creating a haven for endangered bees and an urban space for the insects to pollinate flowers“. I’m a great supporter of bees and hope Adele and Fiona keep up the good work. If you’re interested in bees as well you might interested in another post of mine concerning “Song for the last Queen”, an bee themed art installation by Sybille Neumeyer: https://anticsroadshowblogspot.wordpress.com/category/souvenirs-2/

2. The Touring Caravan Gallery: Another brilliant idea! If you want to know exactly where the Touring Caravan Gallery is at the moment, check out its Facebook page. It could be closer to you than you think!

3. Pie @ Freedom Festival: If you’re in Hull and you like pies, why aren’t you at Hull Pie eating a delicious pie? You’ll find Hull Pie at 19 Trinity House Lane, HU1 2 bang in the centre of The Old Town. Hull Pie has also branched out to 202 Newland Avenue, but I haven’t had the pleasure of going up there yet. You can keep up to date with the menu on Twitter: https://twitter.com/thehullpie

4. Lean On Me: I’ve already featured this on my blog, but I couldn’t resist posting it again! You can read more about it here:  https://anticsroadshowblogspot.wordpress.com/2014/04/08/photo-archive-yarn-bombed-lamppost-hull-september-2014/

5. The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show: Hearing that Craig Charles was going to be doing his BBC 6 Music show live from the Freedom Festival was what made me cross the Humber Bridge in the first place, so it be rude of me not to include a photograph of him in my top five. In fact I took quite a few photographs as I made my way through the massive crowd to the front here, so there might be another Craig Charles related post to follow.

Knitted Tie Portrait.

For at least the last five years I have favoured the knitted tie above all other styles, although I can’t recall exactly when I purchased my first, but I think I might have discovered it in a vintage shop in the Grand Arcade, Leeds. The trend doesn’t seen to have caught on however, because I’ve never met anyone else wearing one; not that I consider myself a trend setter! Hence my surprise at finding this portrait of a proud knitted tie wearer.

The photographers name and the address of his studio is printed on the back, “F. Scrimshaw, 46 Woodhouse Lane, Leeds”. The Leeds Museum and Galleries website informs me that F. Scrimshaw appears in the city’s trade directories between 1906 and 1914 at the afore mentioned address and they have a photograph of his as part of their on-line archive and the Leodis “photographic archive of Leeds” has a photograph of “Francis” Scrimshaw’s studio at 46 Woodhouse lane in the mid-1960’s.

Purchased: Haworth, May 2014.

The Haworth 1940’s Weekend was awash with photographers on Saturday, but I wonder how many of them spotted this colourful creation wrapped around a railing on Main Street. Luckily for you and I this work of art was labelled, “The Gothenburg Guerilla“, which lead me to this blog http://guerrillaknitting.wordpress.com/. Enjoy (you’ll find this work filed under “Haworth Bronte Village”).

Especially knitted for Freedom Festival goers in need of something to lean on? I’d like to think so. I did not lean on it myself, because it was quite early on in the evening, as you can see, but I’m sure one or more revellers appreciated it. I did not get a close look at it, but the work looks very similar to this other example of knitting from Hull’s famous Fruit Market:

I spotted this on a stroll through the Fruit Market in the August of 2013 and close by I took note of this chalked up on the wall:

Keep up the good work.

This knitted Dalek or “knitted oddity“, as my good friend Mrs. W would probably describe it, reminds me, every morning, of holidays (holidays in Dorset, to be exact). Mrs. W, my friend, guide to the South coast, historian, tea enthusiast and expert knitter, created it for me and I found it waiting for me in her newly redecorated guest bedroom, back in the Summer of 2011. The exact location of the guest bedroom I would not like to say, but “Dorset Dalek” reminds me of the Wimborne Minster area the most, but also Poole, Wareham, Dorchester and Bournemouth.

I believe the red colour scheme was my choice, to achieve a Peter Cushing, “Daleks – Invasion Earth”, 1960’s, feel (other Doctors and colours are available).

This post is dedicated to everyone who made my holidays in Dorset so memorable.
