King’s Staith viewed from Bridge Street on a beautiful July day back in 2014.

I knew that the “King’s Arms” on King’s Staith had a history of flooding, in fact one Tripadvisor review describes it as “The Iconic Pub That Floods“, but on all my previous visits to York I have been fortunate that the River Ouse hasn’t been in flood, making my visit last Sunday a notable exception.

King’s Staith viewed from Bridge Street on Sunday 27th December 2015.

My travelling companion assured me that I would be able to keep our appointment in York, despite the various flood warnings, because he had studied the route carefully and I must admit that we travelled as far as the Fishergate Bar, which provides pedestrian access from Paragon Street, through the city wall, into George Street. Then the day started to take a surreal turn, as we were faced with the River Foss, which had burst its banks.

Later in the afternoon we reached Bridge Street and stood, with quite a crowd of pedestrians, watching the River Ouse distort a scene I thought I knew. The beer garden of the “King’s Arms”, not to mention most of the ground floor, had disappeared and with it any sense remaining sense of normality.

Having said that, from the very same spot on Bridge Street, I could see diners at “The Slug and Lettuce” eating their Sunday lunches in a building that must have had flooded cellars, which leant the afternoon an added, surreal, twist.

York is a city I love and I wish all of the city’s residence, students and visitors well at this difficult time.

I think that body of water in the distance is Styhead Tarn, but don't quote me on that.

Cleethorpes.
Still no view from The Pier, but here is a view of it for you from the Central Promenade. I’m not sure what sort of works are being carried out on The Pier, but it appears to require a lot of scaffolding!

The Sun was out on Wednesday, as you can see from the photograph above, but was also very windy. The donkeys were plodding up and down the beach, seemingly unimpressed by the horses striding more gracefully on a parallel course. The wind hadn’t put off the crazy and miniature golfers, who were out in force [even I ventured onto the Oddballs crazy golf course] and I saw my first kite of 2015. I didn’t see any one dog walking, but two chaps with a dog were having a cup of tea outside Olivers [despite the wind a number of people, including myself, opted to take their tea outside in the fresh air].

Sheffield.

"The Fat Cat".

“The Fat Cat”.

An article on the BBC website entitled “The Forgotten Flood: Sheffield’s tragic past remembered” informs me that, “The Great Sheffield Flood of 1864 claimed the lives of at least 240 people and left more than 5,000 homes and businesses under water when the poorly constructed Dale Dyke Dam at Bradfield collapsed“. “The Fat Cat” was “The Alma” back then and the pub had only been standing for fourteen years when the disaster occurred. The BBC archive also reported that “RAF helicopters were used to lift stranded office workers from buildings in the Lower Don Valley and Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough football stadium and the giant Meadowhall shopping centre were pictured swamped under several feet of water“. These lines really made me think, specially the 1864 high water mark, which was well above my waist!

I didn’t have a Pint in “The Fat Cat“, because it was too early in the day, but it looks very nice on their website, so I’ll have to pop in on my next visit to Sheffield.
