Wimborne Minster.
Another usual example of stained glass from Wimborne Minster [the first being a depiction of The Resurrection]. Joseph of Arimathea, wearing a blue halo, as well as a red cap, lowers Jesus Christ into a “modern box tomb“, on the left of the scene. Nicedemus, who helped prepare Jesus Christ’s body for burial, wears a purple halo and stand on the right of the scene. Mary, The Blessed Virgin Mother, looks composed beside Joseph of Armathea. Mary Magdalene however is obscured by the haloes of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicedemus, which makes for a rather unusual composition!

You can see the top of her head above the haloes and two hands raised in an attitude of grief.

Angel, Banner of The Resurrection, Church architecture, Church of England., Churches, glass, Jesus Christ., stained glass., The Resurrection, tomb, Wimborne Minster

Wimborne Minster.
To quote from Richard Taylor’s “How To Read a Church“, “The moment of the Resurrection is not recorded in the Gospel, but it is widely portrayed in the art of the Western Church. Jesus emerges in glory from the tomb. He is dressed in white or gold and may be holding the banner of the Resurrection, a pole bearing a pendant with a red cross on a white background“.

Here the banner has a white cross on a red background, but I think it is safe to say that the central figure in this scene is Jesus Christ, bearing the wounds of his crucifixion (note hole in the palm of the right hand), rising from a rather fantastical tomb! The scene is made even more unusual by the presence of an angel in the foreground removing what looks like the lid of what Taylor describes in his book as a “modern box-tomb“, which seems to bear little relation to the crenelated from which Jesus Christ is emerging.

Wimborne Minster.
“Upstairs you can see one of the last surviving ‘tent rooms’ in Europe, painted to resemble the military campaign tents that Napoleon lived in as he waged his wars across Europe” …and there are other rooms to, but this is my favourite! If you can’t see resemblance to a tent you might want to have a look at the National Trust’s website: http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/kingston-lacy/things-to-see-and-do/house/. I don’t won’t say too much, because I’ll spoil it for you if you are now inspired to go and see it for yourself. It would have been a lovely day out anyway, but The Tent Room was like the cherry on top of the cake.

The hedge.

The hedge.

Before my trip to Kingston Lacy, an impressive country house and garden a short drive from Wimborne Minster in Dorset, topiary was something I largely ignored, but these cheeky looking chaps soon caught my attention from the very start of my visit. I wonder if they are caricatures of people the gardener knows; residence of Wimborne perhaps?

Do you recognise this man?

Mrs. W, my former contact in the Wimborne Minster area, sent me this copy of “Wimborne Life” over a year after our visit to the Model Town, so that just goes to show how memorable our visit was! Wimborne Model Town did not feature on our itinerary, but the sign for it caught my eye and the idea of the Model Town captured my imagination. It has a “Secret Garden” appeal, in that you cannot see the model from King Street and it comes as a great surprise when you see it for the first time. I’d go as far as saying that, if you are a big fan of surprises, you should not ready any further than first paragraph; I would hate to spoil the experience for you! Once inside the gardens you are transported to place that looks very much like the town you have just left, The Minster Church in the centre of the model being the most familiar landmark, even to a first time visitor to Wimborne, as I was then, but you are also transported back in time. The model was cast in concrete in the 1950’s and it has not changed a lot since; apart from a move to it’s present location in the 1980’s to save it from a developers bulldozers. It is a time capsule. There is no Waitrose supermarket in the model Wimborne for example. “The King’s Head Hotel” (one of my favourite places in the full sized Wimborne) model looks very much as it did in real life, although the square in front of it has recently (within the last year or two) been altered considerably, so even in the short time I have been aware of the Models existence it has documented a considerable change in the appearance, I dare say, the history, of the town.

Image But there is much more to Wimborne Model Town than just the model! There is a model railway AND a putting green, but we did not take much of these because we were absorbed my the giant chess. I have seen these giant chess boards before, but this was the only occasion I have ever played with one. A. W, a fellow graduate of The University of Hull, who is now doing very well for himself, won the chess game, but I enjoyed it all the same (not to play down A’s chess playing abilities, but I cannot recall ever winning a game of chess, but I find a lot of fun in the playing, what ever the outcome). Our game must have been a very amusing sight; two six footers playing giant chess set next to Model Town in which we dwarfed everything but The Minster’s towers!
